JOB TITLE: Legal Intern
DEPARTMENT: Immigration
CLASSIFICATION: 22.5 hours per week, starting as early as July 2010.
SUMMARY
Assist Staff Attorney in tracking VAWA immigration cases for survivors of violence from the time of intake, to the gathering of supporting evidence, and getting cases ready for submission, including translations of supporting documentation.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Initial assessment of cases and interviewing clients regarding all of the facts of the case
- Assist clients in gathering supporting documentation
- Filing, copying and translation of documents
- Assist with supervising and delegating tasks to volunteers
- Acting as a liaison with other agencies assisting clients
- Tracking time spent assisting clients for grant reporting purposes
- Research legal issues related to legal cases
- Prepare cases for filing with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service under supervision of attorney
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Commitment to public interest law and poverty law issues
- Perfectly bilingual, English/Spanish absolutely required
- Multi-cultural experience and experience working with domestic violence/sexual assault
- survivors preferred
- Basic computer competency in MS Office and Windows
