June 7 to 25, 3-week "Experience Philippines through Ethnic Music and Dances from Southern Philippines," 11:25 am to 12:15 pm , Monday to Friday, Sandia Preparatory School Summer Program, 532 Osuna Rd NE. Open to children Grades 3 to 8. Limited to 20 participants. Fee: $115 (this comes down to $7). If you want to enroll 3 other activities in the morning, you will get a rate of $400 (4 classes/workshops). Go to Sandia Prep website . This workshop is on page 13 under "Language and Music." Participants will learn two pieces of music & dances (plus puppets): warrior dance (left photo) and janggay (long-nail) dance (left below). The class will be divided into two: dancers and musicians. June 12, Saturday, 11:00 AM, The Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico will be having their Independence Day Picnic at Bataan Park, located on the corner of Lomas and Carlisle in Albuquerque. This event is also a membership drive.
June 19, Saturday, 9:00 AM, Federal Asian Pacific American Council of New Mexico Ist Annual Golf Tournament, Tileras Arroyo Golf Course.
June 21 to July 2, 2-week "Workshop on Ethnic Music and Dances from Southern Philippines," 9:30 to 10:30 am, Mon to Friday. Performance day: July 2, Friday, 11:00 am, FREE (open to everybody). Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, 501 Elizabeth SE. The same workshop as in Sandia Prep except it is a week shorter and no puppets will be used. Registration fee is $5.00 (five dollars) with NO workshop fee. Limited to 20 participants. Must be 8 years and older. This is sponsored by the New Mexico Asian Family Center and partly funded by United Way. The purposes are to share Asian culture, specifically Philippines, and encourage self-esteem by learning new skills (music and dances) and performing at the end of the workshop.
